Competition Rules

The following rules will apply to all club competitions during the year.
(updated 18/8/2011).

Competition entries:

**Prints must be submitted to the competition secretary Duncan McCormack 1 week prior to the competition.

**Digital images must be submitted to projectionist John Pugh 1 week prior to the competition on CD or memory stick. (Not by email unless agreed).

Presentation:

Prints

Prints must be suitably mounted for display with a minimum mount size of 10”x8” and a maximum of 16”x20”

All prints must contain on the reverse side, top left, the author’s name and print title, category (general or advanced) and order of preference.

Text to be in the same orientation as the image with the title presented such that it is prominent.

Projected Digital Images (PDI)

Projected images to be 1024 pixels wide x 768 pixels high maximum (landscape) or 768 pixels high (portrait) 200 ppi, using Adobe SRGB colour space. Images to be JPEG files and to be presented on CD, DVD or memory stick, complete with titles, author’s name, category and order of preference.

Quantities – Prints and PDI:

Annual League competition – a maximum of 3 entries will be allowed in each section from any one member.

Print of the Year and Projected Digital Image of the Year a maximum of five entries is allowed in each section with no more than 2 in any one category.

Repeat Entries – Prints and PDI:

For every internal competition other than the league, no piece of work shall be entered more than once. For the league, work that is not awarded 18,19 or 20 points in its first entry may be submitted a second time. Where an image has been reworked such that it is noticeably different from the original entry then this shall count as a new entry. Images may not be entered as both projected images and prints in any competition.

Work from any competition during the year may be entered in the Print and PDI of the Year competition.

DEFINITIONS

Nature Photography:

Any living flora and fauna

N.B. domesticated animals and cultivated plants may not be suitable for entry into external competitions. – check individual competition rules.

Portrait Photography:

The definition of a portrait is a picture the main content of which is the human form, especially the face.

Still Life:

Inanimate objects, subjects such as vase of flowers and table top creations.

Landscape:

Land or land and water combinations containing minimal human form.

Architectural:

Buildings or detail thereof.

Pictorial:

Any image that does not fit the above categories.

Panels:

Panels can be print or projected images and must contain at least 3 images exhibiting a unifying theme. (the interpretation of this is left to the discretion of the entrant)

Each member may enter 3 panels in each section, Print and PDI.

Prints should be displayed in mounts that bear on the back the member’s name, the panel title and the position of the print in the panel. (Left – Centre – Right)

A small sketch plan may be included with the prints to indicate the form in which the author would like the prints displayed.

THE COMPETITIONS

a: Annual League

The Annual League comprises four competitions open to all members.

There will be two categories, general and advanced.

Each competition is in two parts: prints and projected images, with a maximum of 3 entries in each. Entries will be awarded points out of 20, with a trophy being awarded to the winner of each category.

For all other competitions: The judge will select images for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and may, at his discretion, select further images for Commended and Highly Commended awards.

b: P.G.Wall (Projected Images) and Bob Grazier (Prints) Competition

These trophies will be presented to the best work on a nominated subject. — 2012 subject – ‘Waves’

c: Eric Love Creative Digital Image Competition: (Biennial)

A trophy will be awarded for the most creative projected digital image.

d: Print and Projected Image of The Year

These two competitions are comprised of 6 separate categories:

1: Portrait
2: Pictorial
3: Landscape
4: Architectural
5: Still Life
6: Nature

The judge will select images for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each category and may, at his discretion, disregard a print if he considers it to be in the wrong category, or indeed not make any award for the category.

If any category attracts less than 6 entries they will all be transferred into the pictorial section.

A certificate will be awarded for each category winner. From the 6 winners the judge will select the Print or Projected Digital Image of The Year.

e: Panel Competition: (Biennial)

Panels can be print or projected and must contain at least 3 themed images.

Each member may enter 3 panels in each section. Prints should should be displayed in mounts with the members name, panel title and position of the print in the panel (left, centre, right etc) displayed on the back of the mount.

A trophy will be given for the best print and PDI panel.

f: 5 a side Competition:

Team name to be chosen.

2 pieces of work to be submitted by every member of each team.

Minimum of 4 pieces of either print or PDI from each team.

Total team score to be divided by number of members to give average score.

The team with the highest average score will be declared the winner.
